Honorary Consulate of The Republic of
SAN MARINO IN LISBON
DO YOU KNOW?
The Republic of San Marino is a small European state of 62 km² located in an enclave located in north-central Italy, in the Apennine Mountains, bordering the Italian regions of Emilia-Romagna de le Marche.
However, despite its geographical location and the fact that it has only about 30,000 inhabitants, San Marino is proud to be considered the oldest national state in the world, since, according to legend, it was founded on September 3, 301, by Marinus of Rab, later San Marino, who left Rab (an island in the Adriatic Sea that was then a Roman colony) in 257 AD, when Emperor Diocletian issued a decree requesting the reconstruction of the city walls of Rimini, which would have been destroyed by a pirate attack.
Likewise, San Marino stands out for being the oldest Republic in the world, still having one of the oldest known constitutions, dating back to the year 1600.
